The group

SimOC

This research group was created in 2009 to benefit from the synergy between the highly specialized backgrounds of its members.
It is composed of two professors (Magdalena Cid Fernández and Olalla Nieto Faza), three senior researchers (Armando Navarro Vázquez, Carlos Silva López and José Lorenzo Alonso Gómez) and nine graduate students (Inmaculada Rodríguez Lahoz, Roi Álvarez Rodríguez, Pablo Trigo Mouriño, Eduardo Troche Pesqueira, Noa Campos López, Sandra Míguez Lago, Marta González Comesaña, Antón Brión Ríos and Silvia Castro Fernández) with complementary areas of expertise: Organic Synthesis of Chiral Allenophanes, Nuclear Magnetic Resonance, Computational Chemistry and Biomolecular Modeling.

The group is interested in the properties of cyclic allene-ynes as hosts for small molecules and ions. The research host–guest recognition processes in highly symmetric macrocyclic species will benefit from the three aforementioned areas of expertise. The design of the host scaffolds will be tested and fine-tuned in silico, characterizing their molecular recognition properties and analyzing substitution trends. All the information gathered in this process will be employed in the selective synthesis of the most promising candidates and the subsequent study of their properties. The symmetry, high unsaturation degree and chiroptical properties of these macrocyclic species poses a Challenger for structural characterization where advanced NMR techniques, together with quantum simulations will become of paramount importance.
