The Sociolinguistics, Bilingualism and Language Contact Seminar (SSL) was created in order to promote the research in the enormous field of language and society. The members of the SSL are researchers and teachers in the fields of Galician and Linguistics in the University of Vigo.

In the
"Formación dun corpus informatizado de fala bilingüe galego/castelán" (Galician / Spanish bilingual oral corpus) research project, about 200 hours of conversation from people from different geografical areas have been transcribed. Two transcription systems are used: CA and LIDES, the latter very usefull to link transcribed conversations to sound files.

The members of the seminar organized the "first international symposium on bilingualism: bilingual communities and individualsn" held in Vigo between October 21 and 25, 1997 to which Suzanne Romaine, Louis-Jean Calvet and Alessandro Duranti assisted among others. The Seminar has as its objective to have the second edition of the Symposium on spring 2002.

Despite its name EdS (Sociolinguistics Studies) is mainly written in English. Number 1,1 came out on august 2000 and 1,2 will be out on january 2001. IT leaves room for contributions about traditional questions in this discipline and for related fields, such as: pragmatics, discourse analysis, conversational analysis, interactional linguistics, ethnography of communication, linguistic anthropology, ethnomethodology, language acquisition and socialization, etc. Clearly, we assume as natural the differences between schools or research orientations, and all of them will take up equally a space in this journal.
