The perception of the agriculture industry as traditional and reluctant to change is, more and more, inaccurate. Although lately small-scale and artisan farming has experimented a revival, many traditional farmers want to improve their productivity and yield, like any other supply chain, and, therefore consider automation the way of achieving this goal. The concept of Smart Farm is emerging as the way to increase productivity and improve product quality.
Recently a remarkable development in automation and mechanisation has been achieved. It is particularly relevant its application in the livestock industry.
Within this context, the unification in how software of such systems is developed and the use of simulation processes to study what are the best solutions adopt, attending the particular characteristics of the farm and the production constitutes an interesting field of research and industrial application.
The Smart Farm concept includes not only the areas previously cited, but also and specially simulation. Using suitable simulation tools, farmers may identify not only the best equipment, but also how to improve the production process, the selection of products and obtain solutions which anticipate future problems. The potential of this area is increasing and it can be extended to small and medium farms, and, even, fish farms.
