The tradition of the Jornadas de Economía Industrial started in 1985, following an initiative by the Universidad del País Vasco – Euskal Herriko Unibertsitatea, which also organized the 2005 edition. While in the past the Jornadas de Economía Industrial took place in the Colegio Mayor de la Fundación Empresa Pública in Madrid, since 2001 they have been organized in different locations each year, namely at Universitat Pompeu Fabra in Barcelona, Universidad Carlos III in Madrid, Universidad Jaume I in Castellón, Universidad de Granada in Granada, Universidad del País Vasco in Bilbao IESE Business School de Barcelona and Universitat Rovira I VIrgili in Reus.

This continuation of the Jornadas as an itinerant conference followed from the strong character of exchange of ideas among active researchers on the frontier of theoretical and applied Industrial Organization, as well as the constant improvement in the quality of the research conducted in the Spanish economics departments involved in these meetings. Participants have been invited to the Jornadas from those departments and from other prestigious institutions from Europe and the US.
