Francisco González García (U. of Salamanca) "Love might make me leave loving: The variety of meanings of 'Love' in John Donne's Songs and Sonnets"

Undoubtedly, John Donne´s idea of love is not a fixed concept. Love is seen as a complex feeling. In his poems we can find a wide range of meanings according to different periods of time in his life and according to his different attitudes towards love. On the one hand, we can find a positive idea of love. Love is a sacred state and an idealised concept. Thanks to the experience of love, lovers can achieve self-fulfilment. Love is a kind of rebirth, a new life that brings complete happiness to lovers. On the other hand, love is sometimes seen from a negative point of view. Time and change are the great threats to ideal love. In this way, feelings and attitudes such as disillusion, anger and pain appear in Songs and Sonnets related to the idea of love. When lovers cannot fulfil their expectations, love becomes a source of disappointment for them. The idea of love appears associated with different and even opposing notions such as life and death, passion and hatred. We can find Platonic love in his poems, but we can also find the idea of love as a mere physical and sexual experience. In my opinion, the great achievement of Donne is his outstanding expertise in joining together different and contradictory meanings of love in his poetry.
