Overview
In 2005, GPI became GPI-RV, a new research line on Virtual and Augmented reality was started. As a first step, GPI-RV set up a laboratory for VR/AR research and began to develop their first VR works.
Virtual and Augmented Reality
Among the several applications of VR technologies, we are specially interested Industrial Design applications and the integration of these technologies within companies product cycles, from design to maintainability.
Our first works in this area are oriented to provide training solutions on virtual environments allowing companies to train personal even when the system they will work on does not exists. Implementation of such a class of systems implies several technologies:
· Manipulation of CAD models to be used in an interactive way
· Addition of extra information to allow realistic simulation of
the systems
· Render of complex structures
· Physical Simulation and characterisation of each item in the
model
· Friendly and realistic interfaces between systems and humans
So, several subareas of interest arise from this main research line, running from rendering technologies to Human Machine Interface, going through definition of standards to manage all the additional information required for this kind of applications.

Image Processing and Analisys
Direct application of this line is artificial vision and the set up of optical interfaces for computer systems.
In this field we work closely with the EVA Group here in the University of Vigo.
Submarine Cartography
We are researching the application of image processing and computer systems to build tools that make navigation and location of regions of interest for fishers easier, providing solutions to get realistic representations of sea depth, GPS technology to automatic navigation and Geo-referencing of different kind of data.
