The three first chapters of this series, produced and coordinated by the Spanish Ethological Society (SEE), were awarded in 2008 as the best
series showing research results in the XXV Certamen Unicaja de Cine, Bienal Internacional de Cine Científico.
Four new chapters have been presented to scientists in the research center CENTRO DE CIENCIAS MEDIOAMBIENTALES, of Spanish Research Council (Consejo superior de Investigaciones Científicas, CSIC), belonging to the series entitled "Discovering animal behaviour" that is produced by the Spanish Ethological Society (SEE), which has already completed 7 chapters out of the 12 that are programmed to the end of this year 2009. At the event assisted the promoters of the series, Alberto Redondo Villa (director and filmmaker), Juan Carranza Almansa (producer and president of SEE), José Ángel de Juanes (narrator) and Antonio Torres Porras (musician).
The new chapters have been possible thanks to the financial support of the FECYT (of the Spanish Ministry of Science). By the end of 2009, the team expect to complete the 12 chapters programmed for this series. Each chapter shows the results of investigations
carried out by Scientists at the Spanish Society of Ethology, which develop their work at the CSIC and several Spanish universities. Each chapter successfully shows only in five minutes some remarkable discovery about animal behaviour. The series shot in high definition with an excellent quality of image, is getting a great recognition not only in the scientific community but also in the broadcast world. Its unusual duration, five minutes per chapter, does not prevent that the contents are perfectly understood by the viewer, thus being an excellent tool for the educational world and the citizen in general, as it provides a possibility for approaching to recent scientific knowledge on the behaviour of animals in their natural environments that is unknown to most people.
After the screening there was an interesting debate with ethologists and ecologists attending the event, which acknowledged the accuracy of the series and scientific rigor that keeps all the chapters, also showing very recent scientific discoveries and introducing the viewer into the work of scientists in the field.
The team aims to extend the duration of some of the chapters, thought to reach the public with a format of half hour duration intended to be broadcasted by television. The production of these new documentaries, with a high cost, needs new funding. The team of the series, the Spanish Society of Ethology (SEE) and the Spanish Association of Film and Scientific Imaging (ASECIC) have put their efforts together to achieve this goal.
